The home run was so good we didn't stop till we got to the river, then realised the crossing was downstream and out of reach. Woops.
As the resorts wind down for the 2014 season, there's plenty of action going on in the backcountry...
With Daytripper tickets in hand, the 4 of us (Dave, Pieta, Mike & Deb) boarded the snowcat bound for Charlottes at 8 am, along with others keen to milk the great early spring conditions at Australia's highest resort. Around 8.45 we dropped off the ridge & skied down to a snowbridge over the Snowy River - currently plenty to choose from. As we climbed up towards Carruthers it became obvious that the 20cm which fell two days ago had either been swept off or windpacked on all but the most protected north-facing aspects by yesterday's howling southerly. And the clear sky of last night had frozen the surface solid. We were going to have to search hard for soft skiable faces. Carruthers was taken off the agenda, and we settled for some fun powdery leeside gullies and bowls to the northeast. And enjoyed taking a good look at The Sentinel and western faces. Very beautiful, and to be attempted in better spring conditions...
